Gemini – the twins

The Gemini symbol is the Roman numeral two - II. I find that any planet in Gemini generally has at least two expressions which are quite different. It is traditionally the sign of communication, perhaps the most important communication for each of us is that between the two sides of our brain – logical and conceptual, verbal and imaginative.

Gemini people often have two almost distinct characters – one is wordy, light, charming, and the other tends to be quiet, contemplative, artistic in some way. In the West, the focus in education has been on encouraging the logical side. When a Gemini person gets depressed, I think it may have to do with not being able to express that creative ‘illogical’ side of themselves, and perhaps developing some form of creative expression would help them feel more whole.

Just because a person’s Sun is in Gemini, they are not necessarily a brilliant verbal communicator – but it does mean that their heart feels good when in conversational situations with people. They like ideas to be flowing around, and lots of possibilities in mind. Some Gemini people have Mercury (the mind) in Taurus, and their ideas are likely to be very practical. Others may have Mercury in Cancer, and they may be much more emotional, and more concerned with caring for family and home. When Mercury is also in Gemini, the Gemini person is likely to be more talkative, and the mind more free from personal worldly anchors.

Material facts versus personal connections

The Sun went into Gemini on 21 May, so our Taurus focus on material needs may well have been lessening since then. Saturn and Pluto are still joining together to present us with the facts but, in the New Moon chart, there’s no clear connection between them and the rest of the planets. So there’s a feeling of ‘Enough! No more heavy work - I want a break!’ as though the material facts have little to do with the essentials of life. They still matter, of course, but what feels more important at the moment is to connect with other people, lots of catching-up and sharing our experiences.

Hot air!

Sun and Moon are with Venus at this New Moon, and Venus links sweetly to Mars in Leo. This grouping suggests that June will be about relationships, the communicating we do for the love of it, and the fun we can have when we open our hearts to other people. It looks like party-time! We may find a lot of ‘hot air’ being talked – take care that humour and fun don’t escalate into fights! It is easy to be hurtful when we are more aware of our own enjoyment than how other people are feeling.

There is also some advice given by Jupiter and Uranus, not to let our feet leave the ground while we enjoy ourselves – if we get too rowdy, we could be intruding into someone else’s space; it’s great to throw a party, but not to spend on it more money than we have.

The only way I know to be happy and aware of what is really going on, at the same time, is to accept the facts as they are and adjust to them, not to pretend things are different. (Perhaps I might prefer things to be different, but I wish to be with how they are.) Statements that don’t help are along the lines of: ‘Things will get back to how they were!’ or ‘I’ll muddle through somehow!’ If you’ve spotted a problem in your life, it really needs attention, rather than avoiding it or pretending it doesn’t exist. Use this June’s energy to discuss the pros and cons of different solutions.

Healing community

June is a month to re-gather our connections with each other, so that we are well placed to work together, once we can see exactly what to do. Chiron is on the North Node, which means to me that this is a great time for healing our sense of community. If it takes a ‘natural disaster’ to bring us to our human senses, then disasters are what humanity needs. If we can promote just and open-hearted community now, whatever happens cannot be a disaster.

So let’s have fun in June, and let any communication be more about listening to each other than talking.

Contemplation for this New Moon in Gemini
Duality is
inside and outside
left and right brain
breathing in and breathing out
my walking feet.
Speaking and listening,
giving and receiving,
you and me,
the emptiness of no separate form or thing
and the full oneness of it all.
Each duality is simply the two ends of one pole of thought,
together expressing a paradox that only the heart can understand,
and each paradox is a door that opens
into love and joy and peace.
